Summer Student Staff Wanted

Tyrconnell Heritage Society and Backus-Page House Museum are seeking a post-secondary student to fill a position for the 2019 summer season near Wallacetown, Ontario (www.backuspagehouse.ca). Duties will include museum tours, visitor services, site programming and office administration with an emphasis on AGRICULTURAL EXHIBIT DESIGN, marketing, correspondence, and database entry. Additional tasks may include, but are not limited to gardening, research, creation of exhibit and educational programs, site interpretation and public relations. Requirements – computer and social media experience, current First Aid and CPR certification, current vulnerable sector police check, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to multi task and strong public interaction skills. The candidate must be able to lead and instruct individuals in recreational and leisure programs as well as plan, implement, promote, organize, and deliver outdoor and museum programs, visitor services and other Backus-Page House Museum events. The candidate must be available to work a variety of shifts including weekends and holidays.
This position is posted with grant approval for an employment term subsidy from Canada Summer Jobs Youth Employment Strategy.
To be eligible to apply for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

  • The employment term will run from mid-June to the last day of August.
    Rate of pay will be $14.00 per hour.

    Are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment
    The employment term will run from mid-May to the last day of August.

    Hired By the Tyrconnell Heritage Society Board of Directors
    Employment Probation Term of Six (6) Months
    165 Hours Annually at a wage of $15.00 per hour.  $17.75 per hour starting January 1, 2018
    Direct Supervisor: Cultural Manager
    Performance Reviews Conducted the Cultural Manager, President, and Treasurer

    All financials including procedures and systems will be reviewed on a quarterly basis by the President, Treasurer, and Cultural Manager.  Findings will be presented to the Board of Directors and may result in changes to policies and procedures.  Cultural Manager will sign off on all payroll time sheets.  Bookkeeper must be proficient at Microsoft Excel. 

    Weekly Responsibilities
    • Record revenue
    • Record expenses
    • Pay bills when due online or by cheque
    • Post to project and event summaries
    • Gift Shop reconciliation
    • Admission reconciliation
    • Prepare bank deposits
    • Provide Cultural Manager with financial information as required for such things as grant applications, final reports, budgets, etc.

    Bi-Weekly Responsibilities
    • Payroll

    Monthly Responsibilities
    • Income Statement
    • Bank reconciliation
    • Charitable Tax Receipts sent to donors
    • Petty Cash Reconciliation
    • File government remittances as required such as WSIB, Payroll Deductions, etc.
    • Meeting with the Treasurer and Cultural Manager prior to sending out Board Financial Reports

    Annual Responsibilities
    • Provide the Auditors with all required figures, documents, and financial information
    • Assist the Cultural Manager and Board of Directors with developing the annual budget

    Administration and Finance
    • Review the THS Policies that reference Finance and make recommendations to board
    • Answer phone calls, necessary emails and correspondence
    • Complete all filing and keep good records of all financial activities of the THS for future reference
    • General cleaning and maintenance of your work area

    We're Hiring....Part Time Position Available

    PART TIME POSITION AT BACKUS-PAGE HOUSE MUSEUM

    Must be a post-secondary student under 30 years of age.


    Duties will include museum tours, membership sales, collection records, office administration, and event support.  Must have computer experience, current police check, excellent written and verbal skills.  Shifts include days, evenings, and weekends.  We will make every effort to work around school schedules. 
    This position is subsidized by Young Canada Works through the Canadian Museum Association.
