October is Family History Month

Happy Family History Month!  It's near the end of October, but there is still time to do something about passing on the history of your family.  I thought I'd share some ideas of quick and easy things to do by yourself or with others since the key is to SHARE your history.

1. Label your photographs.
There is nothing more frustrating as a family historian, genealogist, museum curator or archivist than to have photographs with no names, dates or places.  I suggest using a light hand with a pencil or a fine point marker that is photo safe, non-toxic, permanent ink, fade resistant, dries quickly, will not smear once dry, and won't bleed through.

2. Tell your children or grandchildren a story about when you were young and record it on video.  Send them the video and save it in the cloud.

3. Make a visit to the cemetery to say "Hello".  Take your family and tell them who they people were to you.

4. Make a family history related craft.  Here is a link to 13 ideas.   https://www.familytreemagazine.com/premium/family-history-diy-projects/

5. Visit your local museum or archives to see if they have documents or books about your family.  Backus-Page House Museum currently requires an appointment to visit since we are on the off season.  519-762-3072

Civil War Reenactment Pictures Part 3

Don't miss these event pictures from Brian Moser.  Thank you to all the reenactors, volunteers, staff, and visitors for making this a successful FIRST for Backus-Page House Museum.  We hope you learned some Canadian and very local Connections to the American Civil War.  Curious?  Join us next year!

Local WW1 Servicemen Photos Needed

In June, there will be a commemoration event on the 100th anniversary of local participation in WW1 to be held in St. Thomas.  We are assisting by compiling photographs and addresses (at the time) of those locals who served.  Could you take a moment to look through this partial list and see if you have any information, letters or artefacts of these men?
Send anything you have, particularly photographs and their address, to Angela at info@backuspagehouse.ca  We will be putting together a slideshow and table display for the event in St. Thomas.  Watch for more blog posts with lists from different local towns.  We thank you in advance for your help.

Family History Fridays - Do You Know These People?

A photo album has just been donated to the museum collection and none of them are labelled.  The only writing we can find refers to Johnny Sloan, 1887.  If you have any idea who these people are or what family they may belong to (most likely Sloan, McArthur, Allen and others), please contact us.  The photo album is full so we will be posting more photographs over the next few weeks for Family History Fridays.
