Oxford County Museum School Volunteer Workshops: If there are volunteers wishing to go from the western Elgin area, please contact angela@backuspagehouse.ca and we can carpool.  

A one-time registration fee of $5 is all it costs to attend these workshops geared towards volunteers of all ages who are interested in participating in museum activities.

Feb. 11^th

9:00 am - Research Your Project—Where do you begin?  What are primary sources and how do you find them?  We’ll show you how to make your way through the mysteries of researching and directing your     work to meet your planned project.

1:00 pm - Wall Text: preparing a script that visitors want to read—How often have you averted your eyes from a text panel at a museum because it’s just too wordy?  There’s a way to prepare information that you want others to read so that they will.  And are able to. 

Feb. 25^th

9:00 am - Accessibility in the Museum—It’s more than just steps and doors.  It’s lighting, it’s moving through the exhibit space, it’s understanding spoken words, it’s being able to sit still and follow a program – and so much more. 

1:00 pm - Developing an Educational Program—It’s a great exhibit, but if schoolchildren can’t relate to it, what’s the point?  We’ll look at curriculum and linking the program to it, devising hands-on activities, time-management skills, and how to promote the program.

Mar. 11^th  

9:00 am - Artifact Handling — Sooner or later, you’ll have to touch an artifact, and you need to do it the right way.  Gloves, no gloves, what type of gloves – we’ll sort through it and show you how to feel more comfortable handling 100 year old artifacts.

1:00 pm - Exhibit Design: Delight or Dilemma? - What makes an exhibit look like an exhibit and not a pile of old stuff?  There’s an order to it all, and the various steps will be discussed, then put into practice in class with artifacts, themes, design, and props to bring it to life.

The Battle of Waterloo - A History Symposium on Saturday, March 28

at 8:30am - 4:00pm

In Kitchener, Ontario the Region of Waterloo operates its regional museum in conjuction with the Doon Heritage Village.  Its brand new museum building features a wonderful, state of the art theatre that seats approx. 110 people. 

We will be featuring 4 speakers on 4 topics all related to the Battle of Waterloo.

Lieutenant General Jonathon Riley (retired) will speak on the relative generalship of Wellington and Napoleon

Donald Graves will speak on the British Army from the end of the Peninsular War to its raising for Waterloo

David Markham (President of the International Napoleonic Society) will speak on Napoleon before and after Waterloo

Peter Twist will offer a comparative study on the British and French cavalry

The symposium will also offer an optional opportunity to attend a dinner and regency dance with dance callers Tom and Toni Tumbusch.

Description: Established in 1979 as Canada’s only tobacco museum, the museum models a typical tobacco pack barn. The museum also highlights Delhi’s, formerly Fredericksburg’s, unique multicultural heritage and diverse specialty crops such as ginseng. Exhibits include agricultural machinery, arts and crafts, and archival material. Stroll along a historic 1900’s streetscape and visit the Forestville General Store with souvenirs reflective of the area. Description: The Elgin County Railway Museum, located in the 1913 Michigan Central Railroad Locomotive Shops, has the goal of recapturing the railway history of this area by means of artifacts, restored railway equipment and historical displays. Description: Having served as both the local train station and the head office of the Canada Southern Railway beginning in 1873, the Station is a regional landmark. There was a grand dining hall that was frequented by passengers and residents. The line served as a short cut between Buffalo and Detroit for passengers en route to New York and Chicago.

Description: Our archives offers researched material for genealogists and for individuals interested in learning more about our community’s past. Many family trees, histories and obituaries are available for viewing and use. The Lemp Studio collection features 4000 glass negatives of people, events and life in the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. To date about 2000 have been developed and put on display.

Description: The Woodstock Art Gallery offers historical and contemporary exhibitions, adult and children’s classes, a monthly film series offered in conjunction with the Toronto International Film Festival Group, tours and art appreciation programs. The Woodstock Art Gallery was originally founded by the Oxford County Art Association as a Centennial project in 1967 and is Oxford County’s only public art gallery. In 1983, it was relocated from the downstairs of the Woodstock Public Library to the Neo-Georgian manse at 447 Hunter Street. In 2011, the Woodstock Art Gallery moved to its new home at 449 Dundas Street. Description: Explore the nationally designated Old Town Hall built as Woodstock’s first public market, council chambers and concert hall in 1853. Serving later as the first fire hall and police department lock-up, the building became the home of the Oxford County Museum in 1947 and eventually the Woodstock Museum.

Description: This cob building was erected in 1827 as a blacksmith shop and carriage works. The construction is unusual in Canada with its black walnut beams and two foot thick clay and straw walls. It houses artifacts from the Sparta area as well as other early Upper Canada memorabilia.

Blacksmithing Classes

Helmut's Forge Blacksmithing Classes and Interpretation Workshop

May 14-15, 2011

Located at the South Norwich Historical Society's Blacksmith Shop, Otterville, Ontario This is a one-day course to teach the basics of the historical trade of Blacksmithing and its interpretation of it to the public. Basic techniques such as fire building, tool handling, steel and iron selection, temperatures, and basic forging to make small demonstration pieces. Plus safety. History of the trade and its importance within Upper Canada / Ontario, including some effective techniques to bring the trade alive and understandable to a wide range of public, including school groups.

Classes are limited to six, with hands on time; each person will make at least one small item besides practicing the basic techniques.

For volunteers and staff of Historical Sites, Museums and Associations the cost of the one-day course will be $75.00 all materials supplied.

Tim Foster is a smith of 40 years experience in Blacksmithing. I was the full time smith a Black Creek Pioneer Village for 4 years and the Interpretive Coordinator for the Trades, for 6 years. I have also taught and demonstrated the trade at sites and events around the province for 30 years. As Interpretive Coordinator it was my job to teach all of the trades staff how to interact with public in all of its variations.

Incumbents successful to these positions will staff various tourist booths throughout Elgin County and the City of St. Thomas providing tourists with information. Although each Tourism Assistant is responsible for one main location, all Tourism Assistants will be crossed-trained to cover hours in at least one other location. Responsibilities will include maintaining inventories of brochures, retaining tourism survey data, updating the Elgin/St. Thomas Tourism website, database development, promoting both St. Thomas and Elgin County to the general public and other duties as assigned.

A major part of the Tourism Assistant experience includes operating as a goodwill ambassador for Elgin/St. Thomas. In many cases the Tourism Assistant will be a tourist’s first exposure to the area. Visitors from around the world have signed our guest books and experienced our famous tourist attractions. This is an exciting, customer oriented position that requires an outgoing and self-motivated personality.

Hours of Work: Approx. 35 hours per week - hours will vary including weekends

Effective: May 18, 2011 – September 5, 2011 (**Subject to Grant Approval**)

Salary: $10.25 per hour

Qualifications:

1. Must have own transportation and a valid class ‘G’ Ontario drivers license.

2. Experience in computer software including word processing, and excel spreadsheets.

3. Pleasant, outgoing with a basic knowledge of St. Thomas and Elgin County.

4. Good time management, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.

5. Minimum Grade 12 graduate currently attending post secondary education facility.

6. Must be returning to full-time studies in September 2011

7. Preference will be given to residents of St. Thomas and Elgin County.

Eva Brook Donly Museum and Archives Book Launch

On Saturday March 19th, the Eva Brook Donly Museum & Archives will host historian and prolific author David Beasley as he launches yet another book. This newest publication will appeal to anyone interested in the War of 1812, in particular the capture of Detroit by British forces and the subsequent invasion of American forces onto Canadian soil.

“A Canadian Campaign: Operations of the Right Division of the Army of Upper Canada, During the American War of 1812, by a British Officer” was originally written by Major John Richardson

Not issued since its first publication in the 1820s, ‘A Canadian Campaign’ narrates Richardson’s experiences with the 41st Regiment of Foot from the Battle of Fort Detroit through the Battle of the Thames and his imprisonment in Kentucky. Vivid descriptions of the American Indian nations fighting under Tecumseh, the hardships of the campaigns, and the tribulations of imprisonment make it a unique and invaluable contribution to the upcoming celebrations commemorating the War of 1812.

Another of Richardson’s own works has been included in this same publication. Not seen since 1841, ‘Recollections of the West Indies’ describes Richardson’s military experience on Barbados and Grenada from 1816 to 1818 within West Indian society and denounces slavery with such poignant examples that the essay must have influenced English parliamentarians to abolish it.

In the bonus essay ‘In Search of Richardson’s Spain’ Beasley retraces the march of the British Legion over the Cantabrica Mountains as described by Richardson in his Journal in 1835, contrasting then to now.

The book launch will take place at the Eva Brook Donly Museum & Archives between 2:00 and 3:30pm on Saturday March 19th. The Museum is located at 109 Norfolk St. S. in downtown Simcoe. Copies of the book will be available to purchase for $15; other books by Beasley are also for sale in the Museum gift shop.

Get ready to board the holiday bus, for a fun approach to fundraising as the Norfolk County museums once again host Decadence in December.

This event is a progressive dinner party which will take diners across the county in an evening filled with good food, fine wines and plenty of festive entertainment.

The adventure takes place on Saturday, December 11, 2010 and begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Port Dover Harbour Museum with appetizers, music and wine. From there, guests will board the bus and head over to Spruce Row Museum for a scrumptious prime rib dinner catered by Phil McLaren and wines from Florence Estates. Then, sit back and relax and be entertained by an all-star cast in a festive holiday play that will have you singing along and tapping your toes to the music. We finish the evening off at Delhi Tobacco Museum and Heritage Centre where a decadent selection of desserts will be served along with coffee and tea and more musical entertainment. The bus will then take you back to Port Dover.

Tickets are $100 per person. Ticket price includes transportation to each museum, entertainment on board the bus, as well as meal and wines. What a great way to support our local museums and kick-off your holiday season. Tickets would make a great Christmas gift for someone special.

Edison Fest

Edison Museum of Vienna

On June 5, 2010 the Edison Museum of Vienna, in cooperation with Museums Bayham, welcomes everyone to the annual Edison Fest held at the Vienna Memorial Park.

The day long event starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. and offers food and craft vendors all day. Come enjoy making your own ice cream sundaes and floats, eat all the free popcorn you want and indulge your sweet tooth with some cotton candy.

Live entertainment starts at 1 p.m. and features fiddle player Clayton Barker, pianist Bob Van Impe and vocalist Cindy Franklin. A talent show will begin at 3 p.m. and Bayham’s own Elvis impersonator will make his annual appearance.

The event is great for children as there are many fun activities to do all day. Children can play on the bouncers, climb the rock wall, do crafts, make homemade ice cream or go on a horse and buggy ride. There is a little something for everyone.

Participate in the many competitions and contests like the Lazy Light Bulb Race down the Otter Creek or the Cross-cut saw and nail driving competition. There will also be free draws for great prizes such as bicycles and skateboards. Prize winners must be in the park to claim their prize.

A silent auction and yard sale put on by the Vienna Citizens Group could offer some interesting finds or scratch your history itch and visit the Edison Museum, located at 14 Snow St., and learn about inventor Thomas Edison’s connection to this tiny, rural community.

There is a lot to see and do at Edison Fest and we look forward to seeing everyone there.
