Saturday Sighting

Hi everyone!

I hope this blog post finds you well!  This week's nugget of nature is the Tomato plants that are currently growing in the kitchen garden at the Backus-Page House museum.

Five fun facts about the Tomato plant:
  • Tomatoes come in many sizes including grape-size up to beefsteaks!
  • "Determinate" tomato plants only grow to a certain height and their fruit is good for canning and making sauces.  "Indeterminate" tomato plants keep growing all season and produce fruit throughout as well.
  • Tomato plants are prone to pests and diseases so need continuous care.
  • The Tomato plant is native to South America and many people believed that the fruits were poisonous when the Spanish brought them back from the New World.
  • In Germany, the Tomato was called "The Apple of Paradise" and "The Apple of Love" in France during the 19th century.

Have a great weekend everyone!  Stay safe and take care!
