Did you see our “What’s it Wednesday” post on Facebook? We
asked what this round and very spiky metal object could be. The spikes are
contained with a round rim which is situated on a round base. The base is then
attached to a decorative wooden plank.
This object is actually a flax hatchel!
A flax hatchel is a comb with metal spikes used for
preparing flax plants for spinning into linen thread. Flax straw is pulled
through the hatchel’s iron teeth to separate the flax fibers. The finer the
comb used the finer the linen thread will be produced.
The long wooden board would have been used to secure the
hatchel to make the process easier.
